Inter coach Simone Inzaghi has expressed pride in his side’s performances against Liverpool in the first leg of the 1/8 finals in the Champions League on Wednesday, despite losing 2-0 at home.
Inter dominated Liverpool most of the time at the Giuseppe Meazza and hit the post through Hakan Calhanoglu in the first half, until a goal by Edin Dzeko was disallowed for an offside position.
However, the Reds held up well and reaped the victory in the end, thanks to goals from substitutes Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.
This is a very commanding result for Jurgen Klopp’s team before the return match at Anfield in March.
“This match should increase our self-confidence, it should serve as a starting point. During this season we have played many good matches, but never against an opponent like Liverpool”, said Inzaghi.
He further added: “We missed the goal. In the first half we hit the crossbar with Calhanoglu and on Dumfries’s shot we were unlucky. I’m proud because it was our best game of the season. Now let’s put aside the Champions, think about the championship and then about the Italian Cup.”
