Barcelona has experienced the worst start in the history of the club in the biggest European competition for clubs, the Champions League, after suffering the second consecutive loss at the beginning of this competition.
Benfica defeated Barca 3-0 on Wednesday, causing them the second defeat in a row with the same result, after Bayern Munich had defeated them in the opening match of the group weeks ago.
This is the first time the Catalans have lost their first two matches in the Champions League.
Barcelona had such a start in the UEFA Cup, when they were defeated twice by Porto in the first round in the 1972-73 season.
Barça are in deep crisis on and off the pitch, as apart from financial problems – which led to the departure of Lionel Messi – Ronald Koeman’s side have won just one of their last five games.
