Interim Manchester United manager Michael Carrick owed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer the Red Devils’ victory over Villarreal, which secured them a place in the top 16 in the Champions League.
Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho gave Carrick the victory in his first game as interim coach after Solskjaer was sacked days ago.
This was United’s first victory in the last four games and means that the English giant secured the ticket to the knockout stage directly.
“I told the players that the last two days have not been easy for anyone at the club. “I enjoy this victory so much but this result is for Ole and I can not avoid this”, said Carrick after the match.
“I am happy that I did my job and that everything went according to plan in the end.” he added.
United is the leader of Group F with 10 points after five games and has a safe place in the first group.
United will face the Young Boys in their final group match on December 8th.
