Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo: What does mathematics say?

English expert and researcher has studied this question

Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo is a permanent question in English football and now an academic in England has turned this into a mathematical problem in trying to solve it.

Dr Tom Crawford from the University of Oxford has compiled a data model comparing the 10 best footballers of all time according to certain criteria – and has ranked them using statistics.

Crawford has been asked by LiveScore, to whom Cristiano Ronaldo is global ambassador, to create the G.O.A.T index and the mathematician starts the task with enthusiasm.

To be included in the starting list of the top-10, players had to have high scores in seven categories: club trophies, national team trophies, club goals, national team goals, Golden Balls (minimum two required, statistics, seasons with Z-factor (mathematically amazing seasons).

In a complex model, points are awarded for each category based on multiple factors, taking into account the difficulty of achieving results and rewarding these players for the successes they have had across different leagues.

Statistics Messi vs Ronaldo

After much discussion and reckoning, Dr Craford’s system has given a top 10 that gives an answer to the Messi debate against Ronaldo.

It was the Portuguese striker who took the lead, also due to his record of goals with the National and his success in several leagues that helped him to be ahead of Paris Saint-Germain number 30.

From 100 points down each player is rewarded and the top 10 is as follows:

Cristiano Ronaldo (100)

Lionel Messi (94)

Pele (85)

Ferenc Puskas (57)

Ronaldo Nazario (52)

Marco Van Basten (44)

Alfredo Di Stefano (37)

Michel Platini (33)

Diego Maradona (31)

Johan Cruyff (30)
