Diego Simeone has revealed that he had asked Luis Suarez to ask his former Barcelona team-mate Lionel Messi if he was open to joining Atletico Madrid.
Messi left Barcelona in the summer after his contract with the club expired, a year after Suarez joined Atletico from the Camp Nou.
Before confirming the transfer of the Argentine representative to Paris Saint-Germain, Simeone asked his star striker to find out if Messi would like to join the Spanish champions.
Speaking to Argentine media, Atletico Simeone coach said: “I did not call Leo, but I called Suarez to ask what Messi was doing, whether he would like the idea and if there was any chance that he would come at Atletico ”.
“It was something that lasted three hours, because PSG had already decided to take him. So the opportunity to work with Messi never came,” he added.
Messi has made five appearances for PSG this season, scoring one goal, against Manchester City in the Champions League.
