Zinedine Zidane has resigned as Real Madrid coach, but this is not something new. It is not even the first time he has done this as a coach.
Either way, the Frenchman leaves an indelible mark on the Santiago Bernabeu, winning four Champions League titles as a coach and as a player.
Farewells seem to come naturally. This time his farewell was expected, even though he had a one-year contract.
2006: Unexpected retirement
Zidane was still one year on his contract when he left Real Madrid for the first time, “hanging up his shoes” as a footballer in 2006.
His last match in the Real Madrid shirt was in the 3: 3 draw against Villareal at the Bernabeu, a match in which he scored a header. After the match, Florentino Perez was still persuading the Frenchman to change his mind.
2018: Another shocking farewell
Zidane had become one of the best coaches in the history of Real Madrid at the time he announced his departure at the end of the 2017/18 season.
The announcement came just five days after leading Los Blancos to their third consecutive Champions League title, beating Liverpool in the final in Kiev.
2021: Time to leave… again
After returning and winning La Liga last edition, the Frenchman failed to revolutionize the squad so that young talent could develop properly.
This “divorce”, although the whole decision of Zidane, has benefits for Real Madrid as well. They need someone new to lead them after a trophy-free season.
