The 54-year-old coach can lead Lyon, Nice or Napoli after confirming that he will leave the French champions
Christophe Galtier has resigned from Lille, two days after he was crowned Ligue 1 champion with his squad. Lille defeated the Angers on Sunday, finishing one point ahead of Paris Saint-Germain. Despite their success, Galtier has decided to leave the club after four years on the bench of this club.
“I have made my decision. I have confirmed to my president, Olivier Letang, after talking to him for a long time this morning, that I will leave LOSC. Or it will end with LOSC, I do not know what adequate term to use,” he told L’Equipe.
“I feel strongly that I have done my job here. This four-year cycle is enough for a coach. So, yes, I’ve only been working with Olivier Letang every day for five months, and five months is not long enough.
“Having spent four years here, I feel from the inside that it is time to leave this wonderful club. My decision is not related to the final ranking of the team, even if we had finished fourth or seventh, the decision would be the same.” he added.
“I do not want to leave after a success. I left because I decided that after four years it was time to leave. “I spent eight and a half years at Saint-Etienne, including seven and a half as a coach, it was a good time.”
“I am leaving Lille with extraordinary results, I need something else. I do not want to be a victim of routine, a classic coach, because I tried it at a point in Saint-Etienne. Joy and tears, always in the same environment “.
Who will Galtier lead?
Galtier says he has already been offered three teams and has confirmed he is interested in working with Lyon, Nice or Napoli. “Among these clubs that have asked me, there are only three today. Lyon, Nice and Naples? Yes, I’m looking at these three clubs. We will see if the fourth one comes.”
“Will he sign with one of these three clubs? Football is very special to me, you never know.” Galtrier added that he expects his decision to be made later this week.
How were Lille’s performances at Galtier?
The 54-year-old, who also played for Lille as a defender from 1987-1990, took over the team for the first time in December 2017 when it was in danger of relegation to Ligue 2. But the team from Northern France survived ending in 17th place, a point without falling in the play-off zone.
The next season had a big turnaround, where they finished as runners-up behind PSG, then was in fourth place for the 2019-20 season. Lille has been at the top of the table for 2020/21, but that only happened in the last game of the season where they secured the title. They had also won Ligue 1 in 2011.
